Spencer Keeton Cunningham working on an installation in San Jose for the group exhibition ARCHETYPE$ at Empire Seven Studios, opening 11/13.
SF based artist Lucca Raventinkie was feeling discouraged with the local art scene, when art spaces were closing, and with other events last year which led her to ask Why Is Art Important? And to ask fellow artists this question, to hear their perspective. Since this question and conversation is usually facilitated by the public and society we hardly see writing by artists. Lucca wanted to find out why do artist prioritize this part of their lives to the extent that they do. On her blog Why Art Is Important, Lucca is posting artist responses to the question to complete '100 Days Of Why Art Is Important'.
In Lucca's first entry on her site, she responds to the question Why Is Art Important with the following,
“Because no one is the same, and art is about being human. Thus, we come to understand others’ perspectives which are outside of ourselves.”
When Lucca asked artist Spencer Keeton Cunningham Why Art Is Important for her 44th entry, he responded by sending her the photo above.
Spencer has connections to the Bay Area, from working as an art handler, installing artwork for galleries, and creating his own work for exhibitions. Spencer has been living and working abroad for the past 18 months, taking photos, filming videos, painting murals, and more.
Spencer says the ARCHETYPE$ exhibition will be the last time he ever creates an art show, so make sure to visit the Empire Seven Studios in San Jose for the reception this Friday November 13, or while the work is up through December 1.
Lucca is also giving a public talk titled, Have your cake and eat it too: (my) sexuality today, at the Sub SF about her work on a current painting project, on 11/17 at 7:30pm. Find more info here.
