Last night the Mission was abuzz for the first week of art openings this month. There was a solid cluster of galleries, including Ratio 3, Needles & Pens, and FFDG. Check out the recap.
First we stopped to see China Boo by Barry McGee at Ratio 3. In their always unassuming Mission space, McGee shows large and small works, including sculptural pieces, collections of surf boards, and illustrations on glass bottles.
China Boo by Barry McGee at Ratio 3, on view now through Dec. 19.
At Ratio 3's newly acquired space at L.Quan next door Barry McGee curated a group show Presented by SF MOMA on the Go, featuring work by over 60 artists including Chris Lux, Claire Rojas, Ryan McGinley, Thomas Campbell, Jenny Sharaf, Orion Shepard, Ari Marcopoulos, Mark Gonzales, Brian Chippendale, Jeff Canham, Jim Drain, Alicia McCarthy, Mark Cross, Andrea Sonnenberg, Jay Nelson, Andrew McClintock, Sandy Kim, Keegan McHargue, Ted Pushinsky, Steve Powers, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Josh Lazcano, Ray Potes, Ruby Neri, Chris Johanson, Tommy Guerrero, Stefan Simkich, Noam Rappaport, and many others.
Over just a few blocks was Needles & Pens's opening of OK by Damien Hoar de Galven. The wooden sculptural works are made using found and repurposed wood.
Ok by Damien Hoar de Galven at Needles & Pens is on view now through the end of 2015.
On 19th and Mission, Jason Jagel's reception for CRAP SHOOT opened at FFDG. Jagel's show include small and large works on paper, including framed and unframed pieces.
The mixture of muted and vibrant colors, text, shape, and narrative, is part of how Jagel can speak to anyone. From the personal to the political ideas in his work, and the anonymity of faceless figures arouse the viewer's curiosity in Jagel's work.
CRAP SHOOT by Jason Jagel at FFDG is on view now through Dec. 5.
Friday also saw the opening of new work by weaver and fiber artist Meghan Bogden Shimek at Bell Jar and You Don't Have To Be Alone Tonight by Dan Gluibizzi at CULT | Aimee Friberg Exhibitions.
