May 12: SoMapagmahal: Galing Bata’s 15th Anniversary Celebration. SoMapagmahal presents photography from middle school students of the Galing Bata Afterschool Program at Bessie Carmichael Filipino Education Center! SoMapagmahal is a play on the acronym "SoMa" (South of Market of San Francisco) and "mapagmahal" (a Tagalog-Filipino adjective describing someone who is loving, caring and empathetic). Mentored since January by select teaching artists with multimedia exercises, field trips and collaborative workshops, youth artists have been using photography as a tool for self-empowerment and community advocacy. SoMapagamahal culminates in a zine publication, inspiring and celebrating the resilient voices of young emerging artists!
